What is the Channel Scheme?
The Channel Scheme is a joint system,
where Egyptian students initially registered for PhD
degree in their home university in Egypt with an Egyptian
supervisor, may have an additional supervisor in an
Irish university. Both supervisors collaborate in
the relevant area of students’ research projects until
the award of the degree.
Thus, the Scheme is based on and aiming
at opening collaborative channels between Egyptian
and Irish universities and at establishing academic
links between staff members in both countries in areas
of research of mutual interest for both sides.
The joint supervision or Channel Scheme
has been running most successfully for some years
now, and has definitely strengthened relations between
Irish and Egyptian universities. Many Irish universities
have an agreement with the Egyptian Educational and
Cultural Bureau in London to cooperate in the scheme
and the number of participating students continues
to grow.

How does the
Scheme work?
Channel students would not register for a degree in
the Republic of Ireland and would be considered as
visiting research students, hence this Bureau does
not expect to pay full overseas fees in this case.
However, the Bureau would pay a special fee mutually
agreed by the Irish university concerned. Students
cannot commence their studies unless the question
of fees has been settled, and the fee approved by
this Bureau.
Channel students are sponsored by the
Egyptian government; whilst in this country and the
Bureau will cover their fees in addition to their
living subsistence in the way of a regular monthly
salary.

Competency
in English
Channel Students should achieve a total IELTS score
of at least 6.0 (or as specified by the Irish supervisor)
before arriving in the Republic of Ireland. This Bureau
cannot under any circumstances pay for further English
Language tuition once a study fellow has arrived in
this country.

Duration of
Study
Under this scheme, students have scholarships for
one year extendable for a second year upon mutual
agreement between the external supervisor and the
Egyptian Educational and Cultural Bureau in London.

Exchange Visits
Once the Bureau approves an arrangement to accommodate
a student with an Irish university, the Irish supervisor
has the choice of visiting Egypt for ten days, either
prior to the student’s arrival in this country so
(s)he can meet with the Egyptian supervisor and the
student to approve the research programme of the student.
Alternatively, this could be done through email and
the Irish supervisor may postpone the visit to attend
the student’s viva after concluding his or her studies
in Ireland.
The Bureau will issue a return ticket
to the Irish supervisor on Egypt Air (economy class)
and will also facilitate the necessary visa. Accommodation
and transportation in Egypt will be arranged by the
supervisor’s hosts.
Egyptian supervisors’ visits usually
take place during a student’s period of study in the
Republic of Ireland to enable them to discuss his
or her progress with their Irish counterpart. Again
this is arranged between the Egyptian and Irish supervisors.
